Server Message Block (SMB-CIFS)

Server Message Block (SMB-CIFS) provides shared file storage over a network, commonly for Windows environments. In SITE Cloud, SMB shares let authorized users and VMs access centralized files and folders as though they were local.

Use SMB shares for centralized file storage, controlled access, collaboration, and internal file access across users and systems.

Prerequisites

  • A VM configured as a Domain Controller in the HSA zone is required when Active Directory users need to be fetched.
  • The Domain Controller VM must have a shared IP address.
  • The Domain Controller VM must run Windows.
  • The Domain Controller must be in the same environment of the share

Creating an SMB Share

  1. Open Storage.
  2. Open SMB-CIFS.
  3. Click Create.
  4. Enter the required fields, including a unique share name.
  5. Click Submit.

Viewing Share Details

Open the share name to access its tabs.

Tab Purpose
Details Shows general share information and storage configuration. You can update the share quota from this tab.
Domain Controller Add, update, edit, or detach the configured domain controller.
Users Add Active Directory members or local members and assign permissions.
Backups Provides backup management for the share. To find out more visit File Share Backup and Restore Documentation
History Shows changes and actions performed on the share.

Domain Controller Actions

Action Description
Add a Domain Controller Select an eligible VM and provide domain details. Eligible VMs must be in HSA, assigned a shared IP, and running Windows.
Update Domain Controller Admin Credentials Update the admin credentials for the configured domain controller.
Edit Add, remove, or change the organizational unit path. The domain admin password is required to confirm the change.
Detach Domain Controller Detach the domain controller from the share. This also removes authenticated Active Directory users associated with the environment.

When adding a Domain Controller, provide:

  • Domain.
  • Organizational Unit Path, optional.
  • Domain Admin Username.
  • Domain Admin Password.

User Permissions

The Users tab supports:

  • Active Directory members, retrieved from the configured domain controller.
  • Local members.

Each member can receive one of these permission levels:

Permission Access
Full Access Read and write.
Read-Only Access Read only.
