Backup Repository
A backup repository is centralized storage for backups from multiple sources, including Virtual Machines, Object Storage (S3) buckets, NFS shares, and SMB shares.
Definition
Use backup repositories to aggregate backup storage, control backup quota, monitor utilization, and manage backup-related billing through a defined repository quota.
Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Unified backup repository management | Stores and manages backups from multiple portal items and services in one place. |
| Quota-based billing | Billing is based on the repository quota you define, not actual backup usage. |
| Utilization tracking | Shows the percentage of quota used. |
| Flexible quota management | Lets you adjust repository quota as needed. |
Creating a Backup Repository
- Open Backups from the left menu.
- Click Create.
- Fill in the repository details.
- Submit the request.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Business Group | The business group that owns the repository. |
| Name | The backup repository name. |
| Description | A short description of the repository. |
| Quota | Maximum storage, in GB, allocated to the repository. |
Note
Billing is calculated from the quota you select, per GB. For example, if the quota is 1000 GB, billing is based on 1000 GB regardless of current usage inside that quota.
Managing Backups on a Virtual Machine
- Open Virtual Machines from the left menu.
- Open the target VM.
- Open the Backups tab.
- Click Manage Backup.
- Select the backup repository.
- Choose the backup regime, or use on-demand backup for a one-time backup.
Monitoring and Managing the Repository
- Open Backups from the left menu.
- Open the target backup repository.
- Review usage.
- Open the Resources tab to check associated resources.
Moving Resources to Another Repository
Use this workflow when you need to balance backup storage across repositories.
- Open the portal item you want to move, such as a VM or database.
- Open its Backup tab.
- Click Edit Backup Settings.
- Under Backup Repository, select the new target repository.
- Save the changes.
Managing Alerts
When a backup repository exceeds the warning threshold, such as 80%, an email alert is sent.
Increasing Backup Quota
- Log in to Cloud Portal.
- Open Storage.
- Open Backup.
- Locate the repository that triggered the alert.
- Click Edit from the right side of the row, or open the three-dot menu.
- Enter a larger quota.
- Click Submit.
Tip
The current guidance recommends setting the quota to three times the current usage to avoid frequent alerts and keep room for growth.
