File Share (SMB/NFS) Backup and Restore

File share backup and restore creates copies of NFS or SMB shares and their contents so a share can be restored to a previous state when needed.

Overview

Use file share backups to protect against accidental deletion, data corruption, or system failure. Restores create a new restored share from a selected backup version.

Supported File Share Types

  • NFS shares.
  • SMB-CIFS shares.

Backup Options

Option Description
Scheduled backup Create backups on a daily, weekly, or monthly regime.
On-demand backup Immediately back up the share regardless of the selected backup regime.
Disable backup Turn off scheduled backups.

Note

Running an on-demand backup does not affect the configured backup regime.

Configuring Backup Policy

  1. Open the NFS or SMB share.
  2. Open the Backups tab.
  3. Click Manage Backup.
  4. Select the backup repository where the share should be stored.
  5. Choose the backup regime: Disable Backup, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
  6. Click Save.

Running On-Demand Backups

  1. Open the share.
  2. Open the Backups tab.
  3. Click Manage Backup.
  4. Use the on-demand backup option to back up the share immediately.
  5. Click Save.

Restoring a File Share

  1. Open the NFS or SMB share.
  2. Open the Backups tab.
  3. On the desired backup version record, open the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Restore Share.
  5. In the Restore to a New Share modal, enter the new share name and description.
  6. Return to the NFS or SMB share list.
  7. Confirm that the newly restored share appears in the list.

Operational Considerations

Feature Description
Full share backup Creates a complete copy of files, directories, and metadata within the file share.
Share restoration Restores the entire file share to a newly created share.
Point-in-time recovery Restores a previously performed backup version from available backup history.

Common use cases include accidental deletion recovery, disaster recovery, development or test cloning, and data integrity protection.
